The Pipol Of The Year award is being given out by ABS-CBN’s News and Current Affairs Program “Pipol,” to persons who have made an outstanding achievement in their respective fields for the year 2005.

Vitamin D lowers cancer risk: study

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Cancer researchers urged people on Wednesday to take more vitamin D to lower their risk of colon, breast and ovarian cancer, saying studies showed a clear link.

"Our suggestion is for people to increase their intake," through diet or a vitamin supplement, Dr. Cedric Garland said in a telephone interview.

Garland's research team reviewed 63 studies, including several large long-term ones, on the relationship between vitamin D and certain types of cancer worldwide between 1966 and 2004.

He said the benefit of vitamin D was as clear as the harmful link between smoking and lung cancer.

"There's nothing that has this ability to prevent cancer," he said, urging governments and public health officials to do more to fortify foods with vitamin D.

Garland is part of a University of California at San Diego Moores Cancer Center team that published its findings this week online in the American Journal of Public Health.

The paper concluded that vitamin D deficiency may account for several thousand premature deaths from colon, breast, ovarian and other cancers annually.

Vitamin D is found in milk, as well as in some fortified orange juice, yogurt and cheeses, usually at around 100 international units (IU) a serving.

People might want to consider a vitamin supplement to raise their intake to 1000 IUs per day, Garland said, adding that it was well within the safety guidelines established by the
National Academy of Sciences.

The authors said that taking more vitamin D could be especially important for people living in northern areas, which receive less vitamin D from sunshine.

African Americans, who don't produce as much of the vitamin because of their skin pigment, could also benefit significantly from a higher intake, the authors said.

Toga's parents are building a new nest

The zoo where Toga the baby black-foot penguin was stolen said yesterday that his parents had started to build a new nest and were preparing to mate again.

Officials from the Amazon World Zoo Park, at Newchurch, Isle of Wight, admitted that there was now almost no chance of three-month-old Toga's having survived.

Toga was stolen at night 10 days ago, sparking world-wide newspaper and television interest.

Kate Bright, the zoo manager, said: "The parents have made every effort to find him. They appear to have decided he is not coming back.

Now they are starting courtship again so that they can replace the lost baby. They are carrying around nesting material to make a new nest."

Miss Bright said that could mean that a new clutch of eggs would be laid within the next month.

She said it was nature's way for animals to respond to the loss of young by attempting to breed again.

"It will help them get over it," she said. In the wild they would have to get on with it."

She said that both birds were recovering their appetites and looking stronger.

How my Christmas was...

Fun. Nauseating. Spooky. Lonely.

Well, last night was the fun part. We went to my tita’s house and celebrated our Christmas there with my couzins and other titos and titas… So, yun kuwentuhan, we got to check out their new car and computer… hehehe..

then siyempre, we got to eat, the usual lang na hinahanda: lengua, korean bbq, salads, lechon (which didnt taste that good), and one of the weirdest thing ive tasted: spiced wine or Glögg(in Swedish), which was a very popular holiday drink daw in other nations, Taga Sweden kasi yata ung husband nung sis ng tita kow..

I took part in the preparation  syemps i was curious about the setup kung saan ilalagay yung wine.. parang yung setup nung candle with incense ba where may glass bowl sa taas and candles underneath. Then there were these small cups with tiny spoons placed around…

so un, first we added the spices which we were in packs na like cinammon sticks, nuts, raisins and orange peels… hehe,,, weird noh? then we boiled it a little and placed it na on the set up… the smell makes you feel nauseous… wat pa kaya yung taste.. so yun, it was served warm coz the candles were lit under the glass container and they added pa raisins and almonds sa cup koh… binigyan nila ko, and first taste ko… YUCK! naluha talaga ako… i didnt wana show my tita and his husband xmpre nakakahiya din… pakonti konting pilit… ahihi… then binigay ko sa cuz ko na 2nd yr high school na girl  tapos inistraight niya! waaaaaa! di ko nakaya un!  pero i was relieved na din na i dont have to drink that stuff… my other tito naman at first di niya talaga gus2, pinamigay niya lang, then binigyan siya ulit,,, ahihi… but he added some ice, and then later on siya rin nakaubos! wahaha…

after nun, videoke time with the oldies… ahihi… pinipilit kami magkanta wid the kids pero xmpre nahihiya kmi kahit na my 500 daw na price pagnaka99! hihi… imposible yata sa kin un..

so, it was getting late na and siyempre ang favorite part ko, AGINALDO TIME! weeeee… kahit na naka2000 lang me… ok na un noh.. kesa last yr wala… kahit na matanda na koh… hehehe…

AFTER THE PARTY

Ang Scenario sa bahay namin:

  • Umuwi ang mga katulong namin
  • My older sibs spent their Christmas with their spouses
  • My mom, my dad, and my younger sib, umuuwi sa other house namin…

So guess what? ako magbabantay ng bahay all by myself.. hay the spirit of christmas… ahihi… sanay na rin me… nung November 1 ganito din, pero di naman ako takot…

And get this, halos lahat na ng mga tao sa house namin kahit mga vsitors ng sister ko, yung asawa niya, at asawa and ex ng kuya ko, plus our katulong, nakakakita na ng mumu! buti na lang ako wala pa and malabo ang mata ko! ahihi… just 2 nights ago, nakakita yung sis ko at around 1 am coz gising pa lahat kami and kami lang 4 sa haus with her husband and baby na dumaan sa harap niya na lalaki wearing white shirt and red shorts! as in malinaw talaga, hindi lang shadow or silhouette… waaaaa!

And guess what, as im writing this entry, ako nanaman magisa dito nagbabantay! waaaaa… 2 night straight paskong pasko! ano ba!?! ahihi… pero im not scared at all, pero na lang kung may makita ako! waaaa! hwag naman sana!

so yun, Kayo, how was your Christmas?

Daniel Radcliffe to Be Cast in New Role?

Harry Potter star Daniel Radcliffe might land on a new, different role soon, as he is in negotiations to play in Kenneth Branagh's version of “Equus” by Peter Shaffer, according to the Daily Mail.

It is said that Kenneth Branagh will direct the play in the West End around January 2007; that is in 13 months time.

But Dan's representative has denied such rumors,
declaring that the young actor's plans are to shoot “Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix” in 2006, and to focus on A levels during the 2007 summer.

If he were to be a part of Kenneth Branagh's project, Daniel would play a 17-year-old boy who blinds horses and appears to find them sexually arousing.  (sexually aroused by horses????)  now, that’s interesting…

According to “The Guardian”, “the plot involves the hero reaching the height of sexual ecstasy while riding a horse.”

With such a part, Radcliffe is in no position to fear being type-cast.
But the Harry Potter producers might still have a word on whether Dan will be allowed to accept it or not.

Britney Spears Fighting with Kevin at the Cinema

Britney Spears and Kevin Federline have offered quite a show to onlookers present in a cinema. Hundreds of people could watch the two fighting.

According to the New York Post, “Kev spent the whole time on the phone. Then they had a fight when he tried to leave early.”
Not even the movie they've seen, “Memoirs Of A Geisha”, had an effect on them.
Let’s hope that the holiday to the Caribbean they are planning might help things. A beach and some sunshine...

According to a source quoted by The
Bosh, “They fell out badly. This holiday is make or break.”

The tormented relationship might soon reach its end, to the delight of Britney's fans. They have even launched a site to help the singer get rid of Kevin.
Is there anybody thinking about the child? Apparently no.

In the meantime, Britney is reportedly fed up with the press publishing untrue stories about her and hubby Kev, so she is taking legal action.

US Weekly is number one on the list, for printing a false story that claimed Britney and Kevin had made a sex tape and were worried about it being shown to the world.

Britney is asking for $10 million in libel damages and $10 million for misappropriating her name to promote magazine sales, and also for undisclosed punitive damages.

Xmas....

Just 3 more dayS!!!

Desperate Answers needed...

So I,ve just watched the season ender (not sure if it’s Season 1 or 2) of Desperate Housewives just an hour ago, things started to clear up. I was so confused before about the case of Zach and his dad and the skeleton on the toy chest on the pool. The body inside the chest was actually Zach’s real mom, whom Mary Alice killed because she was trying to protect her family from Zach’s mom. Ahhhhhh… yun pala yun… I got even more confused because the show is actually played on 3 channels: (Studio23, mnet Series, and StarWorld). and paiba iba yung episode syempre.. I sticked to Starworld though.

But i still have to raise some questions, if u guys can help me…

1.) What’s the cause of the death of Breeny’s husband? Why did he wrote a letter saying he understands and forgives Breeny? Ano ba ginawa ni Breeny?

2.) What’s the role of the old woman na laging kausap ni Zach na laging pinagluluto siya ng cookies.? Yung nakabangs… ahihi

3.) Who killed Mary Alice? Suicide ba?

Hehe… hope you guys can help me out… I love this show..

Smoking lowers chances of surviving throat cancer

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - For people with cancer of the larynx or lower pharynx, continuing to smoke or drink alcohol make it less likely that they'll survive, while eating a diet rich in vegetables and vitamin C improves their survival, a new study shows.

"One might think, now I that have cancer, what's the point of stopping smoking? But there is clearly a benefit in doing that; it will improve your survival," Dr. Rajesh P. Dikshit commented to Reuters Health.

Tobacco smoking, alcohol drinking, and diet have all been linked to the development of cancer in the larynx, or voicebox, and the area immediately above it at the back of the throat, the hypopharynx. However, little was known about the role of these risk factors on the survival of patients with these cancers.

Dikshit, working for the International Agency for Research on Cancer in Lyon, France, and his colleagues conducted a study to analyze the survival of patients with laryngeal and hypopharyngeal cancer. They followed 931 patients who had enrolled in a previous cancer study that had started in the early 80s, and analyzed the role of tobacco, alcohol and diet on cancer outcome in these patients for up to 21 years.

As they report in the International Journal of Cancer, the investigators found that smoking was the most important factor adversely affecting the patient's survival, particularly in those patients with tumors in the larynx.

"This is a very important finding," Dikshit told Reuters Health. "We knew that smoking is a cause of laryngeal and hypopharyngeal cancer, but now it's clear that it affects survival as well." Alcohol consumption also had a negative effect on survival, but to a lesser extent than tobacco.

But the most important result, Dikshit remarked, was the protective effect of some diet components. "We found that a high intake of vitamin C significantly improved the patients' survival."

The investigators also found a strong protective effect of a diet rich in vegetables, but not of the individual components found in those vegetables. Only vitamin C was protective on its own.

"The message here is that it is very important to stop smoking even after developing laryngeal and hypopharyngeal cancer," Dikshit said.

Eating vegetables and vitamin C is also something cancer patients should consider. "Doctors are prescribing this already, but now we have demonstrated that these diet components improve the patient's survival, and perhaps make the treatment more effective."
