“The Animals” talks about privileged kids and open parties – Plot and Synopsis

What happens when privileged high school kids get together in those “open parties”? How do they have fun once they’re out of their comfort zones?

The Animals Poster Albie Casino Dawn Balagot Patrick Sugui

The Animals, starring Albie Casiño, Patrick Sugui and Dawn Balagot, is one of the entries in the 2012 Cinemalaya Film Festival under the New Breed Full Length Feature category. It was directed by Gino M. Santos from the script that he co-wrote with Jeff Stelton.

It’s the first full-length film of Gino, who said that having a great story was what drove him to submit the script.

The director used to organize “open parties” when he was in high school so the storyline was something he knew all too well.

“During college I realized how interesting it would be to see [these open parties] in a film since I never really saw a film that talked about these things and I would see articles about it on the news,” he confessed.

What sets apart The Animals from the other Cinemalaya entries is that the movie shows a different side of the Philippines through its subject. Pinoy indie films more often than not talks about poverty and whatever it is that goes on in the third world. Gino’s movie, on the other hand, talks about the higher society; what goes on in the lives of the rich kids.

Albie Casino in The Animals Shirtless

Albie Casiño fought for the role of Alex in the auditions and Gino said the controversial actor was perfect to play that part of the “typical popular care free guy in your high school batch.”

Patrick Sugui in The Animals shirtless

Patrick Sugui, on the other hand, was who they envisioned as Alex while they were writing the script. “When I saw him in PBB teens, I thought he was perfect, although I didn’t see him act yet or see him in person at the time,” Santos said. “When I met him while we were casting for The Animals, I proved myself right.”

Dawn Balagot The Animals

They had a hard time looking for an actress to play Trina because the role was a little daring. Santos knew Dawn Balagot since high school and asked her to read for the role. “That’s when I realized that she could play the part, and my team agreed.”

60% of the script was at night and shooting for the movie in the middle of summer (when the sun rises so early and sets so late ) was a challenge. It’s also Santos’ first time to deal with a lot of people on the set so it was a little overwhelming for him. “But at the end of the day, I charge these “hindrances” to experience, so they aren’t bad things at all. We’re all pleased with the outcome of the film so all is well.”

When asked if he’s looking forward to winning, he confessed, “No, not really. I'm just here to tell a story, but an award would be nice, of course.”

Synopsis:

Set in an affluent, upper middle class village in the suburbs, The Animals chronicles a day in the life of Jake, Trina, and Alex, who go through the musings that every kid in high school has to deal with. All Jake wants to do is have a good time, Alex just wants to fit in, and Trina simply wants more. A very vivid picture is painted of life in high school after the final bell rings, as well as a different side of the Philippines, and what is happening to its privileged children.

ABS-CBN and Star Cinema pay tribute to the 50 illustrious years in showbiz of the Star for All Seasons Vilma Santos through a one-of-a-kind film titled, “The Healing.” The Healing Vilma Santos

Vilma’s 50th anniversary movie is equally monumental as this is her first-ever suspense-horror movie. “It’s a perfect project after ‘In My Life,’ which was three years ago. And since I don’t do movies that frequent, I might as well give the public something different,” said Vilma. “This is my first time to do a suspense-horror and I’m so proud of it.”

Governor Vi shared that she is so elated with the fact that she is working now with some of the entertainment industry’s best, including the Master director Chito Roño. “I’ve been asking for so long for something this and I’m so glad that it’s finally happening. With the undeniable top caliber of Star Cinema, Direk Chito, and our award-wining cast, how can I go wrong!” she remarked.

Vilma added that she is particularly excited with her first movie project with one of ABS-CBN’s primetime princess Kim Chiu, “Honestly, Kim is a great actress and I can feel that her career will surely go far in showbiz,” she said.

True enough, “The Healing” is totally a new brand of suspense-horror that will surely make a mark in the Philippine horror cinema. “Stories about the Filipino tradition of going to faith healers for guidance and treatment of ailments have not yet been tackled in-depth in movies. And in our film, the viewers will not just be horrified, they’ll somehow be challenged to think as to how faith healing has already been part of the our culture,” Vilma narrated.

Vilma-Santos

In honor of Vilma’s 50th anniversary, Star Cinema gathered an all-star highly acclaimed powerhouse cast composed of Kim, Pokwang, Mark Gil, Martin del Rosario, Allan Paule, Cris Villanueva, Daria Ramirez, Ces Quesada, Ynez Veneracion, Simon Ibarra, Abi Bautista, Joel Torre, Chinggoy Alonso, Mon Confiado, Carmi Martin and Pokwang.

SOMETIMES, LATE AT NIGHT

Sometimes, late at night I wonder if I zigged instead of zagged.  Sometimes, late at night I wonder if the reason why I'm stuck going around in circles without productivity is because I'm not brave enough.  Filling out job application forms just isn't enough.  There is a rabbit hole that leads to fame and fortune, but I'm not aggressive enough to seek it out.  Sometimes, late at night I wonder if the reason why I'm going around in circles in an unproductive manner is punishment for some unspecified crime that I must atone for.  I'm innocent and blameless.  I've done no wrong and I've hurt nobody.  I was never arrested nor do I aspire to be arrested.  I avoid religious extremism just as much as I avoid political extremism.  Perhaps there are people out there who isn't so certain of such a commitment.  Sometimes, late at night I pray that my Internet blogging isn't scaring off prospective employers who might be reading this Internet blog.  Sometimes, late at night I pray that I don't scare off prospective friends who are in a position to improve my life for the better.  Other times, I try not to worry so much.  I manage to stumble towards the light in a rather haphazard manner.  I pray to GOD that there is employment and the chance to repay my United States Government college tuition debt in the nearby future (Such as tomorow).  There's nothing wrong with wanting to have a brighter future.  There's nothing wrong with wanting to be a better man.  And I pray to GOD that I don't ruin my next big opportunity to improve my life, to have a bright future and to be a better man.
