Heavy drinking may harm male hormones, sperm
NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Problem drinking may dampen both a man's sex life and his chances of having children, according to a new study.
Researchers in India found that men being treated for alcoholism had lower testosterone levels and more sperm abnormalities than non-drinkers did. They also had a far higher rate of erectile dysfunction (ED) - 71 percent, versus 7 percent of abstainers.
Some past studies have suggested that heavy drinking can take a toll on men's reproductive health. One recent study found that couples had a higher miscarriage risk if the man had consumed 10 or more drinks a week around the time of conception.
Also, it's known that alcoholic men can develop signs of low testosterone, including shrunken testicles and enlarged breasts.
The new findings add to evidence that heavy drinking, at least among alcoholics, may harm both men's sex lives and their fertility, according to the study authors, led by Dr. K. R. Muthusami of Kovai Medical Center and Hospital in Coimbatore, India.
"Men are advised to refrain from chronic alcohol consumption if they want to procreate and lead a normal sex life," the researchers conclude in the medical journal Fertility & Sterility.
On the other hand, it's unlikely that light drinking would have any significant effect on men's fertility, Muthusami told Reuters Health.
The study included 66 non-smoking men who had sought treatment for alcoholism, along with 30 non-smokers who had never consumed alcohol. On average, alcoholic men had a significantly lower sperm count, but more abnormal sperm, as well as lower testosterone levels and changes in other reproductive hormones.
According to the researchers, these findings likely reflect direct damage to the testicles caused by excessive alcohol. Alcohol, Muthusami said, enters the testicles directly and can both cut testosterone production and harm the quality of semen.
But the potential harm is not limited to men. Other studies, the researcher noted, have found heavy drinking to impair women's reproductive health as well.

The kikay girl is still clueless whether to believe the rumor concerning her boyfriend JB and “Vietnam Rose” star Angelica Panganiban. Last night, Big Brother allowed the housemates to take a glance at a collage of newspaper headlines. Say got shocked when she saw the tabloid showbiz column headline “JB, nababaliw daw kay Angelica Panganiban?”
The JB-Angelica story came out on a tabloid dated October 20, 2005. The story disclosed details regarding the alleged “super-close” relationship of JB and Angelica.
At first, Say just laughed off the intriguing news about her boyfriend. She even joked around with the housemates and laughingly said “Nakita ko na (yun headline)! Ayun…Lagot siya sakin paglabas ko!... Ayoko nang magbasa!”
But by the worried look on her face, the housemates knew that Say really got affected with 
JB-Angelica headline. They tried to comfort her by telling Say that the news was a mere gossip.
Funnyman Jason even told Say that the "JB" mentioned in the headline could be a different person like "JV Villar" or "Jayvee Gayoso."
Cass also advised Say not to think too much about the headline since they were not able to read the whole article. “Para (ma-enganyo) yung mga magbabasa, ine-exaggerate nila yun kasi iyon yung parang headline nila. Pero hindi natin alam ang buong storya kung paano siya na interview. At feeling ko talaga hindi sasabihin ni JB na nababaliw siya kay Angelica,” Cass explained.
The housemates didn’t get to read the details of each headline since they were not allowed to get too close to the collage of newspaper headlines prepared by Big Brother.
Say's Confession
The kikay girl finally broke into tears when Big Brother summoned her to the confession room to get her sentiments about the intriguing news. When Big Brother asked Say if she thinks that the JB-Angelica story is true, Say said, “Hindi ako naniniwala sa headline na iyon, pero masakit siya noong basahin ko siya. Kasi sino ba naman tao ( na hindi masasaktan) kung may boyfriend ka or girlfriend ka tapos mababasa mo iyon,”
According to Say, she still trusts JB despite the rumor. “May tiwala ako sa relationship namin. I do trust him and I have faith in him that he won’t do that pero nasaktan talaga ako (doon sa balita). Kasi sabi naman nila lagat nagbabago. I hope he is not cheating and he’s not doing anything to hurt me because that is his promise. Even when we saw each other here, he said that he’d be waiting outside. Sa tingin ko paglabas ko nandiyan siya,” Say disclosed.
Say said that she’s willing to move on in case JB has found a replacement for her.
Since she couldn’t have a face to face confrontation with JB on this issue, Say just gave a very emotional message to her boyfriend where she asked JB, “Nababaliw ka na ba kay Angelica?

Nicole Richie reveals more on Paris Hilton split
Nicole Richie has broken her silence.
In a new interview with Jane magazine, the Simple Life star spoke up about her rift with former BFF Paris Hilton, saying that no reconciliation is in sight.
Richie said she and Hilton "really haven't been friends in probably about two years," but declined to say what caused the falling out between the ex-confidantes.
"I know that Paris loves to talk about it and that stuff, but that's just not my style," Richie told Jane. As for whether she thought she and Hilton would ever make up, she replied, "No, not at this point."
Last April, Hilton released a statement attributing the split to Richie, but failing to provide specifics.
"I will not go into the details of what happened," Hilton said. "All I will say is that Nicole knows what she did, and that's all I am ever going to say about it."
Despite the bad blood between the two socialites, both remain under contract for the fourth season of their reality series, The Simple Life.
Though Fox decided earlier this month to drop the series from its schedule, Hilton said last week that production plans remained in place.
"We're shooting Nov. 1," the heiress told the Associated Press. "All the networks are fighting over it."
While Hilton remained unshakably optimistic about the future of the series, Richie seemed less certain of what her Simple Life role would consist of this time around.
"Nobody knows what the concept is right now--we're just signed on to do it," she said.
In addition to finally opening up about the demise of her friendship, Richie addressed another much talked-about topic--her weight.
The formerly curvy celebutante denied rumors that her dramatic weight loss is due to an eating disorder.
"Nothing people say really bothers me, but that bothers me because I wouldn’t want somebody younger than me, someone who looks up to me, to believe it," Richie said.
She also denied father Lionel Richie's public suggestion that stress over her upcoming nuptials to fiance DJ AM (aka Adam Goldstein) caused the pounds to melt away.
"I don't know why [my dad] said that...I think what he meant to say is, like, if you're doing a million things, obviously you eat less," she said.
Meanwhile, Richie was enthusiastic on the subject of her wedding day.
"I want our wedding to be huge. And I want everyone to come, and I want it to be the happiest day of my life," she said.
No word on whether "everyone" included Hilton, but we're guessing not.
Apart from preparing to walk down the aisle, Richie makes her big-screen debut Friday in the comedy Kids in America.

Chx Cries Over Her Controversial Pics
A teary-eyed Chx admitted yesterday in her first press conference that she’s the girl in the three revealing photos of a PBB housemate circulating on the internet. The photos started circulating in emails and web forums a few days before her eviction last Saturday.
She clarified that the indecent pictures were not taken inside Big Brother’s house. Her ex-boyfriend, Love Thadani, took those pictures a year and a half ago while they were having a "playful moment." “When you love each other, you do crazy things,” she explained.
Chx is still puzzled as to how the pictures proliferated on the net. According to her, she has talked to Love about this issue and the latter has denied that he's the source of the pictures.
Chx recounted that right after they took the photos, they encrypted it using a cellphone software in order not to be seen by other people. Unfortunately, Chx lost her mobile phone inside a taxi cab sometime last year. According to her, someone might have gotten her mobile phone and decided to spread the photos. “Hindi namin (Chx and Love) akalain na lalabas (yung mga pics) dahil encrypted yung files,” Chx disclosed.
The ex-housemate cried as she narrated how the controversy has affected her family. “I felt really bad for my family since they were so ashamed of what happened,” Chx said. She also said that she regrets letting Love take those pictures. (oowsss??)
Chx’s Complicated Love Story
After getting overwhelmed by the numerous questions of the press regarding the picture controversy, the entertainment writes immediately bombarded her with questions concerning her complicated love life.
Chx was quick in denying rumors that she and Love have reunited to rekindle their six-year relationship right after she got out of Big Brother’s house. She clarified that although they still see each other, Love is no longer her boyfriend. “We’re not together anymore but we still see each other. We are still going out,” Chx explained. She also felt bad when Love told several reporters that they’re still together and have not yet separated. (Both Chx and Love were guests at The Buzz last Sunday, where Love said that they had gotten back together. - ed) 
As for her new found love interest, Sam, whom she considers as “a very special someone,” Chx said that she’s serious in fulfilling her promise to the Fil-Am cutie that she would wait for him until he gets out of the house to see if they could continue their short-lived love affair. “He’s very special. Sam is a good man, mabait po siya at gentle. I want his love,” Chx added. 
Chx also said that she was glad to know that she only received one nomination point throughout the four nominations. “At least napakisamahan ko sila na maayos at wala silang sama ng loob sa akin. Yun na lang ang pinanghahawakan ko.”
Despite all the controversies hounding her, Chx is ready to start all over again. The liberated girl is all set to try show business and, hopefully, become one of the next big celebrities of the entertainment world.

Smoking may lead to lowered IQ...
NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - The poorer mental function seen among alcoholics, many of whom also regularly smoke cigarettes, may be partially due to the long-term effects of nicotine, new research suggests.
"People who are also smokers are at a much higher risk," Dr. Jennifer M. Glass, of the University of Michigan's Addiction Research Center, told Reuters Health.
In her study, "cigarette smoking was negatively related to IQ and thinking," she said.
This finding may seem counterintuitive, since many smokers attest to feeling more alert and focused after smoking. Indeed, research shows that improved mental functioning is one of the immediate effects of nicotine exposure. Chronic smoking, however, is known to have the opposite effect.
Studies show that up to 87 percent of alcoholics smoke cigarettes, compared to less than 30 percent of the general United States population. Yet, few studies have looked into cigarette smoking as a factor that might explain the cognitive deficits reported among alcoholics.
To investigate that association, Glass and her colleagues examined brain function among 172 men from the same community, including 103 men who abused alcohol.
The team found that men with higher scores on the lifetime alcohol problems scale (LAPS) and those who reported a higher number of pack-years of smoking (i.e. packs of cigarettes smoked per day times number of years) both had lower IQ scores and lower scores on a test of global proficiency.
The proficiency test took into account the speed and accuracy with which the men were able to perform on a battery of tests including those that measured short-term memory, verbal reasoning and mathematical reasoning.
Upon further investigation, the researchers found that smoking predicted poorer global proficiency even more strongly than alcoholism did. Their findings were published online before publication in Drug and Alcohol Dependence.
Smoking also appeared to be independently associated with weaker verbal and visual-spatial reasoning, the study indicates.
Thus, though smoking did not account for all of the decreased neurocognitive functioning observed among the alcohol abusers, it did seem to account for some of the effects, the report indicates.
The reason for the observed associations is unknown, and the researchers did not investigate the "cause and effect story," Glass said, but she speculated that the diminished cognitive ability among smokers may be partly due to some mechanism involving a restricted flow of blood and oxygen to the brain.
Based on the current report, Glass said, "if you need another reason to quit smoking, it's a good potential one to add to the list."

NEW YORK - At $25,000 per minute, advice from Donald Trump doesn't come cheap. That didn't stop thousands of fans from flocking to a Sunday lecture by the real estate mogul, who received $1.5 million for the hour-long speech.
The star of "The Apprentice" urged listeners to be aggressive and remain suspicious of advisers.
"When somebody challenges you, fight back," Trump said, according to published reports. "Be brutal, be tough, Just go get them."
Aspiring dealmakers should work with others while maintaining a competitive edge, he told the crowd at the Learning Annex event, which cost between $100 and $500 per ticket.
"Get the best people and don't trust them," he said. "Work with them, but they have to have respect for you."

Michael Jackson Leaves Neverland For Good
Superstar Michael Jackson has decided to leave the Neverland ranch, his home until this year, when he was accused of child molestation and acquitted in June.
After the acquittal, the pop star thought it would be best for him to relocate in Bahrain, to recover after the trial.
But it appears that Michael liked it so much there that he decided to leave permanently the Neverland and move to Bahrain, where he has already made a lot of friends and fans, the Los Angeles Times reported on Friday.
"He's living permanently in Bahrain. He has friends there who have been very loyal and helpful to him in a difficult period of his life," said his lead attorney Thomas Mesereau. "He's
looking much better. He's with his children, and he's moving on in life."
Jackson's most famous home is his 2,600 acre (eleven square-kilometers) Neverland Ranch in Santa Ynez, California, which he purchased in 1988 for $17 million. It is named after the magical kingdom Neverland from the children's story "Peter Pan".
Jackson, a huge Disney fan, has built an amusement park on the ranch, and frequently welcomes sick and poor children there to visit and sponsors charity drives for them.
Jackson's relationships with children, both his own and others, have been controversial: his sleepover parties at Neverland have received widespread critical media coverage, especially after he has revealed that he sometimes slept in the same bed with several unrelated children.
The real estates agents have estimated that the ranch might fetch now somewhere between 50 and 100 million dollars.

Chx's Eviction Breaks Sam's Heart

The Fil-Am heartthrob is heartbroken. After Chx’s eviction, Sam got very depressed and spent the night sobbing for the liberated ex-housemate. “Very, very sad. Malungkot talaga and mad at the same time, I wish I could be out there…tonight is really the hardest night so far for me, definitely. I feel mad because I’m stuck in here,” Sam told Big Brother during his confession.
Sam’s Confession
Sam also revealed that he definitely has feelings for Chx that’s why he’s missing her so much. He also said that life in the house would be much harder for him since Chx is already gone. Although he wants to be with his newly found love interest, According to Sam, he’s not keen on doing a voluntary exit from Big Brother’s house. “Obviously I can do a voluntary exit, but I couldn’t do that. As bad as I would love to, no. I would just be taking an easy way out. It’s about working through your problems…” Sam explained.
When Big Brother asked Sam to give a message for Chx, he said “Chx, with you leaving tonight, It made things, staying here a hundred times harder for me. I really, really miss you a lot. I hope you were serious with what you said. But if not, I mean, I think that fate would decide, I think that either way, you should follow your heart. I really miss you a lot, wish you could be here right now. When I get out of here, you better give me a huge hug."
Before he ended his confession, Sam sang two songs for Chx. He sang Cueshe’s “Stay” and Hoobastank’s “The Reason.”
Friends’ Advice
After Chx’s eviction, Uma and Say stayed with Sam to help him cope with the situation. They gave him an advice concerning his feelings for Chx.
Uma told his friend not to take things so seriously. “It’s really nothing. Sometimes we just take it so hard. For us sometimes ‘oh my God, they’re not here anymore’ but they’re not dead, they're outside having fun. So instead of suffering here inside, enjoy yourself,” Uma explained.
Moreover, Uma told Sam not to get so serious with Chx since he’s not sure if the liberated ex-housemate would really wait for him until he gets out of the house to continue their blooming love affair. “Expect the unexpected, knowing Chx. She wants them both, she loves Love and she super likes Rico…When we got here, the first two weeks she was super in love with Love. after noon, she super liked Rico, When you got here, all of a sudden she liked you, she was like oh sam, sam, sam, sam. If it will be another guy outside, so its gonna be this guy, this guy, this guy,” Uma disclosed.
Say also told Sam the same thing. She conveyed to Sam that although Chx’s likes him, she might still be in love with her ex-boyfriend Love or Rico. “I love her, she’s my sis but we know her,” Say disclosed.
Although they have previously admitted that they like each other, Sam and Chx only got very close to one another during the past few days, right after they got nominated. Before Chx left the house last night, She promised Sam that she would be waiting for him until he gets out of Big Brother's house to continue their supposed love affair.

WASHINGTON (AFP) - Stealthy selective logging under the dense canopy of Brazil's Amazon rainforest has left twice the amount of the fragile forest degraded by human activities as previously estimated, a US study said.

The worse-than-expected degradation of the Amazon, known as "the lungs of the world" for its ability to absorb greenhouse gases, means that more carbon is being released into the atmosphere than previously thought, the researchers said in an article in the October 21 edition of the journal Science.
Based on a new, high-resolution satellite data analysis, a team of researchers led by Gregory Asner of Carnegie Institution's Department of Global Ecology in Stanford, California said they found that "forest degradation in the Brazilian Amazon has been underestimated by half."
The Carnegie scientists developed the Carnegie Landsat Analysis System to measure satellite observations conducted between 1999 and 2002 and compare them with on-ground field studies.
"We discovered that annually an area about the size of Connecticut is disturbed this way. Selective logging negatively impacts many plants and animals and increases erosion and fires," Asner said in a Carnegie Institution statement that accompanied the article.
"Additionally, up to 25 percent more carbon dioxide is released to the atmosphere each year, above that from deforestation, from the decomposition of what the loggers leave behind. Timber harvests are much more widespread than previously thought."
Selective logging, in which people log trees one-by-one rather than clear cutting, has reduced annually the wooded surfaces of the Brazilian Amazon by between 4,685 square miles (12,135 square kilometers) and 7,973 square miles (20,651 square kilometers), the scientists said.
For several decades selective cutting of at least 35 varieties of high-value trees, such as mahogany, has been done under cover of the dense forest canopy, which made satellite observations difficult.
New optical technologies have allowed the satellites to penetrate the canopy and obtain very detailed images, the scientists said.
Nearly a third of the world's land creatures, from insects to jaguars, live in the Amazon forest. But studies show their numbers have been declining since the late 1970s after fires were deliberately set to clear the land for other uses, such as agriculture.
Seventeen percent of the Brazilian Amazon has been razed.
Giant 'corpse flower' blooms in Germany
BERLIN (Reuters) - The world's tallest -- and smelliest -- flower has bloomed, reaching a height of 2.94 meters, 18 centimeters more than the previous record for the species, the Stuttgart botanical garden said on Friday.
The Titan Arum, or Amorphophallus Titanum, nicknamed "corpse flower" because of its putrid stench, blooms rarely and briefly.
Garden staff have nicknamed the purple flower "Diva" and are charting its life on their web site, www.wilhelma.de.
But those keen for a glimpse, or a whiff, in person must be quick: just 24 hours after the 11 year-old plant produced its first flower, the bloom began to wilt on Friday.
The Titan Arum was discovered in 1878 in its sole indigenous habitat, the Indonesian island of Sumatra, and grows in cultivation in only a handful of places around the world.
Its scent has been likened to rotting fish or animal flesh.
"The smell is crucial to its survival in its natural habitat because it attracts pollinating carrion beetles and flesh flies," said botanist Franziska Lo-Kockel.
Lo-Kockel brought the bulb of the plant, weighing some 40 kilograms, from the University of Frankfurt to the Stuttgart gardens 11 years ago.
The PBB Concert: A success!
Yes, it’s finally over… all the preparations and hard-work of the housemates paid off! It was undoubtedly, a success… The people were just enjoyin, dancing, singing and laughing…
Uma’s performance with the girls, aba, malambot ka pa ineng sa mga babae.. hehe… nakakatuwa yung stares niya, parang mangangain ng anu!! lolz.. natwa ako dun sa my papalo palo pa siya ng sticks sa floor! ang baduy!
Nene, Chx and Cass’ Performance were i think over the top for the pips sa MTRCB.. hehe.. lalu na si CHX! Parang nasagasaan na butiki! kakatakut mukha niya!
Jenny and Jason’s Performance naman, was Mr. Suave and Kiliti, Jason’s dance steps, nakakatuwa talaga especially the thing he does with his feet.. hehe…. pataas taas yung one leg niya.. hehe… Si jenny, was lookin hot with her outfit despite her having a child na, medyo nahuhuli lang nga sa timing..
Of course, the Highly anticipated duet of Sam and Say, twas really a nice song… im not sure bout Say’s mouth though, parang isda… ahihi…
i enjoyed all the performances esp. the finale! franzen and jason’s choreography were just hilarious… kakatuwa talaga! nagparinig pa sa kabila about their ratings.. haha!
