The UAAP Board of Trustees will have none of what De La Salle team manager Manny Salgado did, lowering the boom and voting unanimously yesterday to “perpetually ban” the Green Archers official for sparking a near riot moments after Game 1 of the UAAP men’s basketball finals two days ago.
In what could be an unprecedented ruling, the UAAP board, during an emergency meeting at Casa Espaol on T.M. Kalaw, barred Salgado "from personally watching all UAAP sports competitions in all the venues thereof," with the decision "taking effect immediately."
Mincing no words in a scathing statement, the board also condemned "in the strongest term possible the actuation and conduct" of Salgado, in effect brushing aside apologies made by De La Salle University and its embattled team official.
The team representatives of De La Salle and Far Eastern University abstained from voting on Salgado’s fate.
The controversy erupted after Salgado hit FEU star Arwind Santos in the nape with an elbow after the final buzzer of the Tamaraws’ cliffhanging 75-73 victory at the Araneta Coliseum.
On national television, Salgado appeared to have stepped in between Santos and La Salle’s Joseph Yeo who were exchanging heated words just as the coaches of both schools, Bert Flores of FEU and Franz Pumaren of La Salle, were shaking hands at midcourt.
The two players separated. But at the last minute, Salgado swung around and caught Santos, who had 29 points and 14 rebounds in a stellar performance, at the back of the head.
Seeing his player recoiling from the sneaky assault, Flores went after Salgado and irate FEU fans nearly stormed down the court, triggering tense moments that easily could have escalated into more violence.
The UAAP board labeled Salgado’s actuation as "unacceptable and detrimental to its interest and reputation and that to the public in general," saying it "reserves the right of recourse as it may deem proper should the necessity arise."
Reached by Tempo-Bulletin, Salgado bared that he has apologized in public for what he did, explaining that Santos’ "slanderous remarks" triggered his action.
"I was trying to break up the two (Santos and Yeo) kasi baka mag-kasuntukan. Eh may hawak pang bola si Joseph. He’s very important to the team and I wouldn’t want anything bad to happen. But when I heard slanderous remarks from Arwind, nagdilim yung paningin ko so I hit him," said Salgado. (Asus! talo lang kasi!)
Santos said he was willing to set aside the slight done him, adding the victory did much to assuage his feelings.
"Kagabi pa lang, tapos na sa akin yung insidente. Siyempre, sumama rin ang loob ko sa nangyari, pero napawi rin naman yung sakit dahil nanalo kami," he said. "Mas masakit kung natalo na kami tapos sinaktan pa ako."
Santos revealed that La Salle forward Jun-jun Cabatu and Yeo have been trash-talking him from the onset of the game.
"Pinipikon nila ako, pero sinusumbong ko na lang sa referee," he said.
*hay, ganun pa la mga la-salleista, i was surprised that the players have been trash-talking pala in the game… *boo* and the team manager’s actions were very cheap… bading na bading… wahaha… pagkabatok pa lang, ayun, ang bilis! nandun na nga sa bandang dulo ang team manager, takot na takot… this is an embarassing move by dlsu… buti nga!

My favorite female housemate, NENE, aba dalaga na? hehe… just turned 24. Her dream of having a debut party became a reality through the efforts of Big Brother and the housemates.
Good for you Nene, you deserved it…
The gang secretly prepared a grand debut party as their birthday present for the 24 year-old celebrant. Nene was so surprised to see the house’s garden, which was transformed into a grand ballroom of sorts for her birthday celebration. There were colorful flowers and balloons everywhere. Tables and chairs were covered with pink and white cloth to match the party’s motif. Floating candles were also placed in the pool to add to the romantic feel of the night.
Nene’s favorite male housemate, Bob, served as her escort for the night. The birthday girl was more amazed when the housemates presented their cotillion, which they have been secretly practicing since the other day. The boys also danced a waltz with Nene and gave her heartwarming messages in their own creative ways. Batangueo Jason recited a poem while rapper Franzen composed a song for the ‘debutant’. The girls, on the other hand, gave Nene special gifts.
Of course, after the debut program, they feasted on a sumptuous dinner specially catered for the housemates. But the night would not be complete for Nene without a dance party. The dance diva grooved to the music all night together her friends. And because of her nonstop dancing, she earned a new title as ‘nene-gizer’. Hehe…. Kahyperan!

Miss Philippines Precious Lara Quigaman ended the country's 26-year beauty title drought by capturing the Miss International title in Japan late Monday.
Quigaman, 22, is the country's 4th Miss International titlist. Gemma Cruz first won the title in 1965 followed by Aurora Pijuan in 1970 and then by Mimilanie "Melanie" Marquez in 1979.
President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo congratulated Quigaman for her feat saying "on behalf of all Filipinos, I congratulate Precious Lara Quigaman for winning the Miss International title."
"She joins a long list of Filipinas who have brought our country honor and prestige, not only for their beauty but also for their intelligence, charm and grace. May she serve as a responsible role model for young women in our country," Arroyo said.
Quigaman's victory came four months after her father died in a road mishap in London. She is a media production and communications graduate of the Fulton College in the UK and she also took up a course in childhood and youth studies in Bristol.
Actors Demi Moore and Ashton Kutcher were married on Saturday, capping their celebrated two-year-long older woman, younger man relationship, two celebrity magazines reported on Sunday.
Representatives for Kutcher, 27, and Moore, 42, could not be immediately reached for comment, but both Us Weekly and People magazine reported on their Web sites that the couple were married in Los Angeles area on Saturday.
Us Weekly reported that the wedding was attended by about 100 of the couple's friends, including Moore's second husband Bruce Willis. Also at the wedding were actress Lucy Liu and Moore's three daughters from her marriage to Willis.
People Magazine said Kutcher and Moore met at a dinner in New York City in 2003. After Kutcher began dating Moore, the magazine said "he quickly carved out a place in the lives of her three daughters by Willis -- Rumer, 17; Scout, 14; and Tallulah, 11 --who came to embrace Kutcher as a third parent, affectionately calling him MOD, short for 'My Other Dad."'
The relationship between Moore and Kutcher has been seen by some in Hollywood as evidence of a liberating new trend in which older American women are dating younger men, challenging the traditional convention of May-December romances.
JB’s exit. Hya salamat. nawala din siya. Say kept on crying last night. Hindi siya makatulog. And as for all of us, siyempre masaya tayo! wehehe!!! buti nga!
Against his will, JB left the housemates and the love if his life Say after he got evicted tonight from Pinoy Big Brother.
Joseph Benedict Magsaysay became the second evictee of the show after losing to Racquel in their battle to get the most number of votes from the viewers to avert eviction.
In tonight’s final tally of votes, Racquel was again saved from eviction after receiving 66.3% of the total votes compared to JB’s 33.7%. This is the second time that Racquel escaped eviction in Pinoy Big Brother.
JB’s Emotional Exit
Among the 10 housemates, It was Say who got hurt most with JB's Eviction. She cried profusely after Willie Revillame announced the result of the votes. Say and JB embraced each other for more than a minute as they whispered their final goodbyes for each other.
The other housemates also set aside their disagreements during this very emotional moment in Pinoy Big Brother. Bob, who previously admitted that he dislikes JB, approched him to shake his hand. The other housemates also thanked JB for the memories that he shared with them.
Before he left the house, JB hugged Say for one last time and said “Huwag kang malungkot, magkikita pa naman tayo.” He also told the other housemates to take care of Say.
During his interview with Toni Gonzaga, JB said that although he did not become the big winner of Pinoy Big Brother, he is still grateful because the show gave her the love that he has been looking for. “Nagpapasalamat ako sa pagsali ko sa Big Brother dahil sa pagkakakilala ko sa mahal ko na si Say.” JB also told his girlfriend to stay strong. “Just continue to fight, Keep the faith, I love you, ” he added.
JB’s Memories
“Masama bang magdala ng culture sa bahay na 'to?!” Perhaps, the viewers of Pinoy Big Brother will remember JB through this famous line the he once said. In his 34-day stint in Pinoy Big Brother, JB became the one of the most prominent members of the sosyal group. He repeatedly complained about eating vegetables during the time when the housemates had only 1,500 pesos to spend for their food. He was almost always present during the backstabbing sessions of some of the housemates. When JB was nominated last week, the housemates who voted for him also complained about his bossy attitude. Jb's staunch enemy Bob, said that he was too lazy to join the housemates in performing their daily tasks and challenges.
But the boy next door from La Union also showed his good side. Despite their differences, He was able to unite the group at one point during the dag-dag bawas challenge last week by encouraging the housemates to work as a team and pass the dag-dag bawas challenge for Jenny, who was very troubled at that time because of her Dad’s health condition. Together with Franzen, He also led a prayer for Jenny, when the latter learned of her dad’s critical condition. The boy who fondly reads the bible, also led the housemates when they prayed for the eternal repose of the soul of Jenny’s dad last Thursday.
JB also showed his sweet side through his girlfriend Say. His charming looks and sweetness captured the girl’s heart in less than a month. They eventually bacame the first-ever lovers of Pinoy Big Brother. He also spent most his time with Say during the last six days before he got evicted tonight.
After JB’s eviction, will Say continue loving JB now that their relationship has become a no-communication-long-distance affair? Or will she finally set her eyes on Sam, who openly admitted that he has a crush on Say?
MANILA (Reuters) - Researchers in the Philippines say they are close to creating the world's first clone of a water buffalo that could eventually help raise productivity levels for millions of impoverished farmers.
The aim is to replicate a "super buffalo" that would boost the genetic make-up and milk production of the native water buffalo, the carabao, said Dr Libertado Cruz, executive director of the government-run Philippine Carabao Center.
"We are now in the process of transferring the cloned embryos to a surrogate dam (mother)," he told Reuters on Friday.
"By the middle of next year we can expect some live animals."
The indebted southeast Asian nation is not usually known for technological innovation, but Cruz said cloning had become easier and less expensive since Dolly the sheep, the first cloned mammal, entered the world in 1997.
Brazil has created clones of cattle, including an endangered cow species earlier this year.
Cruz said researchers at the center had created the embryos by fusing genetic material from somatic cells taken from a Bulgarian water buffalo's ear with the eggs of local carabao.
The Philippines has imported about 3,500 Bulgarian buffalo, which are descendents of a high-yielding Murrah breed from India, Cruz said.
The carabao, of which there are an estimated 3.2 million in the Philippines, is a national symbol because of its role in everything from pulling carts to producing meat and milk.
But dairy carabao produce only a relatively small amount of milk, an average of 8 liters (2.1 U.S. gallons) a day, according to Cruz.
"In India, where the animal numbers around 98 million, I have seen some animals producing 35 liters per day," he said. "I would consider these animals as the super buffalo, but they are not so many."
Cruz said the plan was to obtain enough sperm from cloned male super buffalo to start a widespread insemination program in the Philippines that would create higher-yielding carabao.
He said there was no danger of the Philippine carabao being entirely replaced by a new breed of super buffalo because there were genetically pure pools of carabao that would be protected.
"In terms of the future worries of these animals getting extinct, it's not going happen," Cruz said.
MTRCB Suspends Pinoy Big Brother
Thursday, September 22, 2005 7:41 PM
The Movie Television Review & Classification Board has ordered the suspension of the hit reality show Pinoy Big Brother for exhibiting scenes that the board deemed beyond the parental guidance classification of the show. Pinoy Big Brother will not air on Sunday, September 25, due to the suspension issued by MTRCB.
In an official letter sent to ABS-CBN, MTRCB Chairman Maria Consoliza Laguardia stated that the September 19 (Monday) episode of Pinoy Big Brother contained scenes that were not suitable for TV Broadcast’s PG Rating despite previous verbal warnings issued against the show.
“Despite verbal warnings and instructions to tone down sexually suggestive language, actuations and skimpy clothing and to edit the subject program to fall within the parameters of Parental Guidance “PG” rating for television broadcast, the board has monitored and determined that the episode broadcast on September 19, 2005, to contain scenes, such as but not limited to, kissing scene between housemates Chx and Sam, gyrating dances in skimpy bikini, double entendre dialogue and use of skimpy bikini, to be beyond the parental guidance classification and not suitable for television viewing in violation of Presidential Decree No. 1986 and its implementing rules and regulations,” the order stated.
The board also claimed that the explanations given by ABS-CBN on this matter were insufficient to justify the airing of the said scenes. “The Board, thru the adjudication committee, has considered and evaluated your manifestations and explanations given in the conference/hearing held on September 21, 2005 at 4:00 o’ clock in the afternoon. However, the Board is not convinced.”
ABS-CBN Broadcasting Corporation will comply with the MTRCB’s suspension order and issued the following statement regarding this matter:
“The MTRCB, through its chairperson, Ms. Consoliza Laguardia and its adjudication committee, ordered the suspension of ABS-CBN’s Pinoy Big Brother for 1 episode, as penalty for airing certain scenes that the Board deemed beyond the parental guidance classification of the TV show.
----
In our opinion, we in Pinoy Big Brother have operated within the parameters agreed upon with the Board in the first meeting held last Aug 26, 2005. However, after a discussion with the board last September 21, 2005. the committee decided to proceed with the suspension.
We will comply with the MTRCB Decision.
We understand that Pinoy Big Brother represents a new, unprecedented expression of Filipino reality, a microcosm of human behavior that opens valuable studies and insights into social interaction, relationships and discipline.
We will continue to work in partnership with the MTRCB in producing well-screened episodes given the inherently free-form genre of reality TV. We remain committed in offering the best presentations of Pinoy Big Brother to the Filipino Audience that embraced it as their nightly favorite in television viewing.”
