TV5’s Radyo Singko 92.3 News FM Leads Among PH News Radio Stations

On November 8, 2010, TV5 created another media milestone when it made its first full broadcast of Radyo Singko 92.3 News FM in Mega Manila and some parts of Luzon.

Radyo-Singko

Less than two years on, the first-ever news/talk station on FM radio continues to strengthen its reputation as the most favored station when it comes to news, public service and informative programming—even beating more established AM news radio stations.

Radyo Singko is the clear choice of radio listeners among news stations in Metro Manila.

According to the latest Personal Radio Listening Survey conducted by the Radio Research Council last March 19-26, TV5’s news radio arm takes over the top spot from DZMM in the afternoon weekday (12NN-6PM from Monday to Friday) listening block.

Moreover, Radyo Singko is consistently the most listened news radio station among motorists in the weekday afternoon slot (Monday to Friday from 2PM to 4PM) from public utility (PUVs) and private vehicles alike. The radio news station enjoyed an 11% audience share, breaking away from second-place DZMM (4% audience share) and DZBB (3% audience share), according to the PSRC car coincidental survey from March 5 to 11.

The success of TV5’s radio arm is considered to play a vital role in the network’s long-term goal. During its launch, Atty. Ray Espinosa, President and CEO of TV5, expressed that “[the management] believes in the boundless possibilities of multimedia convergence, and Radyo Singko is part of the great leaps we are prepared to make as a multimedia organization.”

FM news station Radyo Singko’s victory in numbers just proves that Filipino listeners — especially those who are on-the-go with no access to radio transistors — have begun creating a new habit of listening for news and information in the FM band. Survey results also showed that now, more than ever, listeners are veering away from the traditional sound of AM stations that had reigned over the last few decades.

“These figures make us more humbled as we’re talking about a 20-month-old news radio station that challenges normal listening habits. Our audience’s trust solidifies our commitment to serving their interests more as time progresses,” said Luchi Cruz-Valdes, TV5 News and Information (NEWS5) Head. “The welfare of our audiences comes first for us at Radyo Singko. We look forward to putting together more programs that inform, assist and inspire our fellow Filipinos.”

Radyo Singko blends young and seasoned journalists from TV and radio. The pioneering news/talk station on FM is home to credible newsmen and renowned personalities including Luchi Cruz-Valdes, Atty. Mel Sta. Maria, Neil Ocampo, Raffy Tulfo, Gladys Lucas, Nina Taduran, Danton Remoto, Danton Remoto, Martin Andanar, Cheryl Cosim, Sen. Dick Gordon, Paolo Bediones, Cherie Mercado, Cristy Fermin, Jove Francisco, Laila Chikadora, Lourd De Veyra, Anthony Pangilinan and Erwin Tulfo. Made possible by its convergence with other TV5 platforms, some of Radyo Singko programs have started being simulcast nationwide on news channel AKSYON TV and available through 24/7 streaming via online news portal InterAksyon.com.

TV5, Dolphy’s Last Home, Releases Tribute and Statement on Death of the King of Comedy

TV5, Dolphy’s last home network, commiserated with the Filipino people on Wednesday on the death of the revered comedian.

tv5

“The management and staff of TV5 join the whole nation in mourning the passing of our most cherished colleague and one of showbiz’s most revered icons, Dolphy.

“For us in TV5, Mang Dolphy forever lives as the symbol of the indomitable joyful spirit of the Filipino. May the legacy of his laughter sustain us through our trials and triumphs as a people,” the network said in an official statement.

In early 2010, Dolphy joined TV5 where he starred in the sitcom “Pidol’s Wonderland”.

“I think ABS-CBN felt bad about it. But I just wanted to work. I’ve been waiting for a job for the past three years. I love ABS-CBN, but I need to move on,” he explained to the media.

For Dolphy, the transfer to TV5 represented a chance to work with his sons and old colleagues once again and be directed by his son, Eric Quizon.

For TV5 chairman Manny V. Pangilinan, it represented an opportunity to be associated with a legend he had long admired.

“I find Dolphy especially outstanding in two things—a Filipino in the truest sense, and, at bottom, a kind and generous man,” Pangilinan said in his note to Dolphy’s biography, “Hindi Ko Ito Narating Mag-isa”.

In December 2010, Dolphy played the narrator in TV5’s first film venture, “Rosario”, a well-crafted period drama about the life of Pangilinan’s grandmother.

The role won for him the best supporting actor honors at the 36th Metro Manila Film Festival, a welcome bonus to the best actor trophy he bagged for his other MMFF entry, “Father Jejemon”, the last entry in his long filmography.

On July 24, 2011, TV5 celebrated Dolphy’s 83rd birthday with a two-hour special called “Talentadong Pidol”.

Dolphy also co-hosted a special segment of “Talentadong Pinoy” with Ryan Agoncillo.

TV5 Hailed as Rotary Club of Manila's TV Station of the Year, Clinches Gold and Bronze at UA&P Tambuli Awards

TV5’s winning streak continues as the country’s fastest-growing network bagged major awards from two separate award-giving bodies last Thursday, June 14. The Rotary Club of Manila honored TV5 with the Television Station of the Year award in this year’s Journalism Awards, while the University of Asia and the Pacific’s (UA&P) School of Communication recognized the two of the network’s campaign at the Tambuli Awards.

TV5 First VP for Marketing Jane Walker and EVP & COO Roberto V. Barreiro received the TV Station of the Year trophy from the Rotary Club of ManilaTV5 First VP for Marketing Jane Walker and EVP & COO Roberto V. Barreiro received the TV Station of the Year trophy from the Rotary Club of Manila

“Beyond the recognition we receive, these awards confirm that TV5 is on the right track. As the media business involves public trust, we are committed to serve the interests of Filipinos even better now more than ever,” according to Atty. Ray C. Espinosa, TV5 president and CEO.

Since 1966, RCM Journalism Awards has acknowledged significant contributions in tri-media. The award-giving body recognized “NEWS5’s thrust of delivering truthful, balanced and responsible journalism, which was quickly and aggressively executed through the use of leading edge technology in news reporting.” In his acceptance speech, TV5 Executive Vice President and COO Roberto V. Barreiro stressed that NEWS5 is progressively tapping all possible platforms to deliver news relevant to the public. “We are not a television network alone – in fact, we are a content creator. We will push the content to any medium, to any device anytime, anywhere,” said Mr. Barreiro.

Just two years after its launch, NEWS5 was able to reach greater heights by leveraging state-of-the-art technology. This was made possible by the network’s cross-platform perspective which spans free-to-air TV (TV5), UHF-TV (Aksyon TV), radio (Radyo Singko 92.3 News FM), online (Interaksyon.com) and mobile (Traffic Navigator, InterAksyon and Weather apps).

On the other hand, the Tambuli Awards recognized two of TV5’s campaigns, “PBA Kampihan Na” and “Higit sa Balita, Aksyon”. The former, the brand campaign of TV5’s sports channel AKTV, won gold for Best Insights and Strategic Thinking Campaign. On the other hand, TV5 News and Information’s ongoing campaign, “Higit sa Balita, Aksyon,” bagged bronze for Best Media-initiated Campaign.

Executed by Publicis Manila, AKTV’s “PBA Kampihan Na” was deemed an effective tool to establish the basketball association’s loyalties by creating rivalries that make the sport even more exciting. Following the campaign’s launch, PBA games posted an increase in live attendance, while AKTV recorded surge in ratings in the same period.

Meanwhile, NEWS5’s “Higit sa Balita, Aksyon”, established “Aksyon” as a strong brand and successfully transcended multiplatform messaging. This resonated in the organization’s overall public acceptance, evidenced by viewers’ reception of its flagship news program “Aksyon” and other communication channels that carried the brand.

Now on its sixth year, the Tambuli Awards is the first and only award-giving body of its kind that recognizes the year’s best integrated marketing campaigns that value both business results and socially-relevant marketing communications.

MVP Denies TV5-GMA7 Merger! Oops!

The issue of the “big merge” of GMA-7 and TV5 seems to be nonstop.

MVP-GMA7

Ricky Lo wrote in his Funfare column in Philippine Star that the merger was confirmed by TV5’s big boss Manny V. Pangilinan himself during a presscon in San Francisco last Saturday, and that the merge will be launched end of November. (CLICK HERE for related story)

It was in the said San Francisco event where TV5 signed a partnership with Dish Network called Dish Ko ‘To. It promotes the combined channels of GMA Pinoy TV and Kapatid TV5 in the U.S. for better coverage. Dish is a satellite television provider in the U.S.

The Dish Ko ‘To project was perhaps the cause of the merger rumor that was picked up by The Philippine Star.

In a text to Arnell Ignacio, MVP clarified that all he did was to promote TV5 and GMA-7 as well because Dish also carries the network in the U.S. He also clarified that he didn’t say anything about a November deadline or any deadline at all.

The text reads: "you know arnel, all I said was-please support TV5 here in the States. And by the way, pls support GMA7 too (since Dish carries GMA), That was all. No mention of merger investment, combination. Certainly no mention of November deadline or any deadline at all. Suresome people speculated and all i said was I can now say we, re under discussion but nothing finalized at this time."

Meanwhile, GMA-7 released a statement regarding the said merger issue. The statement said that the Kapuso network has nothing to say about it because MVP has already clarified that he was just misquoted.

Below is the statement released by GMA-7.

“GMA Network is not in a position to comment on the article that came out in the Philippine Star today, June 4, 2012, regarding the reported merger of GMA Network and TV5 since we are not the source of the information.

“The said article attributed the information to Mr. Manny Pangilinan (MVP). To our knowledge, MVP has clarified that he was misquoted. We therefore suggest that anyone who wishes to verify may do so with MVP.”

Tulfo brothers

The Movie and Television Review and Classification Board (MTRCB) is suspending TV5’s public service program T3 Kapatid Sagot Kita! for three months with a fine of P100,000.

This is due to the “alleged unlawful, indecent and violence-inciting utterances” of the Tulfo brothers—Ben, Raffy, and Erwin—on their show.

This is still in relation to the airport incident between their older brother, Mon Tulfo, and showbiz couple Raymart Santiago and Claudine Barretto.

The show was initially given a 20-day preventive suspension on May 12 after the said “utterances” were aired on their show on May 7, a day after the incident.

But the said suspension was lifted four days after “under very stringent conditions.”

According to the statement released today, May 30, by MTRCB, led by Chairperson Mary Grace Poe Llamanzares, the Tulfo brothers were in violation of Section 3 (c) of PD 1986.

The official statement found on the MTRCB website is as follows:

In a decision rendered today, the MTRCB Hearing and Adjudication Committee found ABC TV5 liable for the unlawful utterances of the Tulfo Brothers in the 07 May 2012 episode of “T3 Kapatid Sagot Kita.” The dispositive portion of the Decision is as follows:

1.  For violating of Section 3 (c) of PD 1986, the penalty of SUSPENSION for THREE (3) MONTHS is hereby imposed on the show “T3 Kapatid Sagot Kita” including the advisory requirement in this decision.

2.  By way of administrative penalty, a fine of one hundred thousand pesos (Php 100,000.00) is hereby imposed on the show “T3 Kapatid Sagot Kita.

3.  After the complete service of the suspension, the show “T3 Kapatid Sagot Kita” is placed on Probation, or on a per-episode permit basis, until the Board is convinced that the Respondents have implemented self-regulatory measures aimed at preventing future violations.

(Sgd) MARY GRACE POE LLAMANZARES

Chairperson

TV5 WILL FILE FOR AN APPEAL. In response to the MTRCB's decision, TV5 will be filing for an appeal.

This is their official statement:

“TV5 regrets the decision of the MTRCB and views it as an act in excess of its jurisdiction.

“At this point, TV5 will turn to the court of appeals and seek judgment in its pending petition to enjoin the MTRCB from further enforcing the sanction until a definitive ruling is made on the issue of grave abuse of discretion committed by the Censorship Board.”
