Thia Megia sings " Smile " by Michael Jackson on " American Idol " Top 13
Thia Megia's Idol is Michael Jackson, and, wouldn't you know it, that's just who the judges compared her to last week. Her producer has to school her a little bit, telling her that's a Charlie Chaplin tune -- she later calls him Charlie Chapman. Jimmy Iovine thinks she's going to pull off a bit of magic tonight.
Again, Thia entrances the audience with her tone. She's an old-fashioned singer -- no Mariah Carey runs for this girl -- but she has an absolutely lovely voice. Then, the producer's beat kicks in for her, and Steven Tyler leans back in his chair and just grins. But, to me, she sounds less comfortable with something that modern. Still, it's a pretty performance.
Randy loved the intro, when she was singing by herself and the guitar, and compares her to Michael and Adele. He's not sure if he liked the jazzy beat, though.
Steven agrees: "A little pitchy in the middle, but you're so new and young, and you sing so good."
Jennifer thought the arrangement was "interesting" (translate: "It didn't work"). "You sing like an angel."
Thia agrees that she felt more comfortable at the beginning of the song. If she's gone tomorrow night, you can lay this one at the producer's feet. Thia may have a lovely voice, but it doesn't look like it's going to be very versatile.
